CLEVELAND, Ohio – Thirteen. That’s the number of inductees in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2021. Twenty-five is the total number of individual inductees (when you count band members) entering the Rock Hall on Saturday, Oct. 30.
As you might imagine, when you’re dealing with a list this diverse and expansive, you’re also dealing with a lot of numbers. In honor of the annual ceremony finally taking place, we break down this year’s class by the numbers, which we think is something Class of 2021 inductee Kraftwerk would be proud of.
The approximate number of people expected to attend this year’s induction ceremony at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
The year “Early Influence” inductees Kraftwerk and Gil-Scott Heron each released their first studio album. It marks an expanded definition of the category that had typically focused on artists whose work predated the emergence of rock and roll in the 1950s.
How many days between the last live Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in 2019 (the 2020 ceremony was a pre-taped HBO special due to the pandemic) and this year’s event.
How many years ago that Delta blues pioneer Charley Patton released his influential 1929 Paramount recordings that would go on to influence blues legends like John Lee Hooker, Elmore James, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and countless others. Patton is the definition of an “Early Influence.”
The number of Grammy Awards Jay-Z has won so far in his career. That ranks ninth all-time and is the most among this year’s inductees. However, he may not be the most decorated artist at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on Saturday. His wife Beyonce has won 28 Grammys, which is tied for second all-time.
The number of songs that have been honored in the Rock Hall’s “Singles” category. In 2018, board member Steven Van Zandt introduced the category, which is, for the most part, meant to honor artists who may not earn induction into the Rock Hall in other categories. So far, the likes of Link Wray (“Rumble”), Chubby Checker (“The Twist”), The Shangri-Las (“Leader of the Pack”) and Junior Walker & the All-Stars (“Shotgun”) have been honored.
The number of years The Go-Go’s had to wait to be nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The pioneering new wave band first became eligible (25 years after its first official release) ahead of the 2006 ceremony. The Go-Go’s earned its first nomination this year.
The number of times both Kraftwerk and LL Cool J have been nominated for the Rock Hall as performers. Both earn induction in 2021 via side categories.
The number of albums Todd Rundgren has engineered and/or produced for other Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees. Aside from his impressive career as a performer, Rundgren has worked on albums for The Band, Patti Smith Group, Cheap Trick and Hall & Oates. That’s not to mention his legendary work for acts like Meat Loaf, Sparks, Grand Funk Railroad, New York Dolls and others.
Members of the Class of 2021 are being inducted for the second time. Carole King, Tina Turner and Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana) are joining the list of multiple inductees.
Newly eligible, first-ballot Hall of Famers being inducted this year. Jay-Z and Foo Fighters both made it on their first try.
